LoRaWAN is a long range and low power radio frequency that lets things talk to the internet without 3G or Wifi. Its great for remote sensors it can work over 80km LOS. LoRa is easy to get into, the “nodes” are cheap to make with shields for popular micro’s becoming available.
The things network (TTN) are a community that are aiming to create abundant data connectivity for LoRa (and other!) devices – the software is all open source and really very neat.
I am contributing by placing a gateway in the Leeds area, with a second hopefully in conjunction with Leeds Hackspace members to expland the LoRaWAN network.
